Commission responds to Community Input

The final result for the provincial boundaries will be known by the
middle of March after further input strictly from Members of Parliament

All 10 federal electoral boundaries commissions have now had their reports tabled in the House of Commons. You can find the reports on the Federal Electoral Districts Redistribution 2022 website.

Members have 30 calendar days following the tabling of the report for each province to file objections with PROC (see the table below).

Note that PROC meetings are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

After hearing from members, PROC will report all objections back to the House.

The Commission held public meetings to gather information from constituents. Each riding proposal was discussed at various meetings within travelling distance of the riding of concern. We were welcome to attend and give our feedback in person or by email.

There were several points to base any argument:  1) Communities of Interest 2) Communities of Identity 3) the historical pattern of an electoral district 4) and a manageable geographic size for districts in sparsely populated regions.

According to our Constitution, every ten years the seats in the House of Commons are to be redistributed to reflect changes in population growth in the Census. The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for B.C. has presented proposals for riding revisions. Currently, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge are together in one federal riding as they have been for decades. The Commission is proposing major changes. Both Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge would be in two different ridings: Pitt Meadows-Fort Langley and Mission-Maple Ridge.

Pitt Meadows-Fort Langley is proposed to have parts of Port Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Fort Langley and Surrey. The Cities of Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge have come out against this alignment as have elected representatives from all political stripes due to the difficulties of effectively representing all these cities. Pitt River and Fraser River have been the western and southern boundaries of our communities. The eastern boundary has changed in the past to include Mission.

Mission-Maple Ridge includes much of Maple Ridge, all of Mission and communities to the east including Harrison and Agassez and part of Pitt Meadows.   

Presenters numbered 211, and attendees numbered over 465.
